I tried to be as fair as humanly possible so I hope no one is offended, because it was really difficult to judge… everyone did so well.

FIRST PLACE

She won the popular vote which shoved her to first place! There is no description on the piece, but she noted me with one. I am amazed by how just stunningly beautiful this one is… and with paints!! Ack! She got Raven perfectly! The mood is fabulous and the scenery so turbulent but the characters look so calm and sure of themselves.

had this to say about it: “For traditional I cast my vote for #7 (its extremely good and a FULL image) no blank open spaces and the level of detail is great. IT was hard to choose, but the full image made my vote along with the blue/purple color scheme, which are my favorite colors...”

The moment I saw this one… only one thing popped into my head… WINNER!!! Okay, this one wasn’t so hard actually

And to top it off she won popular vote by a landslide... aaaaaand it was my desktop for like a month.

Seriously, just look at it. Her character is everything surrounding my character, Shandar. The trees… the thistle… it like a blanket of soft, warm feathers. Just aw inspiring… The symbolism is just utterly astounding and unlike anything in all the other pieces. Truly original. Totally deserves first place. *Stares a little while longer all dreamy like.* Also, blue and yellow is just one of my favorite color combos.

Such grace! The size differences are astounding in the two creatures but it really works here. Also, the description REALLY sold it to me! Such a lovely story and a great explanation. She also scored second in the popular vote!

I considered this one to be near perfection in EVERY aspect when I was trying to figure out a winner, but she didn’t score as high with the popular vote so slid down a notch.

Just pure fun! Two otters just doing what they do best.

I love the water reflections on their bodies and my favorite part is the little feather on Cirrus’s shoulder.

My most favorite part of the whole image are the fire markings on Ranu. Such a wonderful use of expression!

Cute as a button!! *huggles kittehs* The green highlights on Star are a great touch. I can just see her tail flicking idly side to side while watching Xyruss play!

Wow… seriously… wow. I LOVE the use of symbolism in this one. The symmetry to beautiful in the characters… they just look so powerful! Blue claws ftw!

RAWR!! An epic battle is about to unfold! Kitteh versus lion! Who shall triumph?? Okay… my money is on the lion! I love interesting background on this one, and the expression is great!

The wolf totally pwns this picture! I just love the little thing! The colors are beautiful and I really like the light/dark contrasts moving from right to left in the image.

Beautiful!! Just look at it!! The colors and composition are breathtaking!! I wish I had the patience to make something like this! Ack! I especially like Sirens tail!

*Head explodes from cuteness overload* Eeeeee!! So adorable! And hey, guess what?? The squirrel isn’t a character, but her actual pet hamster, Dill.

I think that is just so kewl!

A kitty! Cirrus is a kitty!

I really like how she incorporated Cirrus’s marking, horn and wings.

I love how he is tussling with her horse OC as a puppy. It is just so adorable!

Check out that armor!! That is so cool! It looks like it wouldn’t even hinder any movement whatsoever.

The earthy tones of her OC are a great contrast to the blues.

Last and certainly not least is this gem! She picked one of my absolute favorite characters of all time, Tiffany (really need to redraw her). The poses are just so lovely and the light a beautiful accent!

The premise of the contest is to take a look at your original characters from a different angle. If their very soul were a different creature… what would it be? If you were to put their personality not only in this new form but around him or her, what would the background look like? How could you portray him/her through symbolism?

Draw at least one of my characters and at least one of yours interacting in different forms based on their personalities. They can be fighting, playing, chilling… more details below to help you out. Be sure to read everything very carefully. This has the potential to get pretty complicated.

Prizes

I will have two winning categories. A 1st and 2nd for traditional pieces and a 1st and 2nd for digital pieces.

1st place for traditional entries. Originals will be mailed to the winner, and a high resolution scan will be emailed. Select one from the following list:
1. 1 year subscription to DA (Can be kept or donated. Can be split into 3 month chunks)
2. A grossly detailed traditional drawing of 2 of your original characters, interacting how you wish. On 11x14 paper acid free, heavy weight sketch paper. You choose between pen or graphite medium. I will only color the drawing with coloring pencils if it starts as a pen base. I urge you to stick with nonhuman characters… but I’ll give humans a shot in graphite only… that is safest… I’m getting better at them! Simple background allowed on all pieces.

2nd place for traditional entries. Originals will be mailed to the winner.
1. A detailed drawing of one of your original characters. Same rules as above. ^^
2. If 1st place winner relinquishes the subscription you can have it if you choose, but you can’t get a drawing too.

1st place for digital pieces. Nothing will be mailed to the winner, but a high resolution image will be emailed for you to make a print for yourself. I can have a print made and mailed to you at your expense if you do not have the facilities (I have a cheap place and an expensive place… expect the quality to be different amongst the two) Characters will interact how you wish. Choose one of the following.
a. 1 year subscription to DA (Can be kept or donated. Can be split into 3 month chunks)
b. A digital creation of two of your original characters with no outlines. Example: [link] No background
c. A pen drawing of two of you OCs digitally colored. Simple background. Example: [link] I will only do human characters in this method
d. A digital lineart of up to three of you OC’s. No background. Example: [link]

2nd place for digital pieces. Once again only a high resolution image will be emailed. I can have a print made and mailed to you at your expense if you do not have the facilities. Choose one of the following, see above for examples:
1. A digital creation of one of your original characters. No background.
2. A pen drawing digitally colored OC. Simple background. Humans will only be done in this method.
3. A digital lineart of up to two of your original characters. No background.
4. If 1st place winner relinquishes the subscription you can have it if you choose, but you can’t get a drawing too.

Judging

I will judge by how effectively and creatively you portray both your character and my character. Since I do not know your character it would be in you best interest to include a detailed description of what you are doing in the picture for both. Sell it to me! Make me want to pick you!! Skill will have little to do with my decision, but don’t slack. I will most likely have my best friend and sounding board help me out with the judging because she knows nearly all these characters as well. She does not have an account on DA so she is unbiased.

How to Win This Contest

1. Follow the rules!! You can get disqualified. If you have a question, don’t be shy to ask me. I’ll be quick to reply. No question is too stupid… but I will know if you haven’t read this entire journal… >.>

2. When you select a character of mine to use listen to me!! I know my characters WAY to well. I have hundreds trapped in my strange little head a nearly all of them are highly developed assuming they have a corresponding series I want to write. Most of them I haven’t even attempted to draw so you haven’t seen them yet… and most of them are human. Read the descriptions I give you. Artistic freedom is totally allowed and encouraged in its fullest, but if I tell you Rancor cannot be put in a romantic situation and you do it, you will lose.

3. If none of my example characters below strike your fancy, write me with what you are going for (theme, animal, color, symbolism, whatever) and I can try my darndest to match a character to it. You can tell me about your character and ask for an opposing or complimenting one from my bunch. I have a ton! Just ask.

4. Symbolism will get you a long way in this contest, because essentially, that is what it is all about here. No matter if you are subtle and pick a few symbolic items, or if you go all out and make some giant abstract piece chock full of it, you NEED to tell me what you are doing and why. I am not a mind reader.

5. WRITE A DESCRIPTION!!!!! Sell it to me!!!

Rulz

Read this or perish!!!

1. The following traditional forms will be allowed: ink, pen, graphite, charcoal, coloring pencil, painting (acrylic, oil, watercolor, elephant dung… whatever), sculpting, pastel, etc. Ask if you have a question.

2. The following digital forms will be allowed: digital painting, digital line art, hand drawn image digitally colored.

3. Photographs and photo manipulations will not be allowed. Stock images not allowed. The ONE exception on this is the use of stock images or your photographs for backgrounds. It is allowed but only if you somehow manipulate it to make it somewhat your own and will only be accepted under the digital art section. If you do this, there is potential I will not judge based on your background at all. I WANT YOUR WORK FROM YOUR HAND, not a camera!! If you suck at backgrounds and don’t like this rule don’t do a background. If you have questions ask me.

4. No romantic/sexual themes are allowed with any character of mine unless I specify. You must follow any heterosexual/homosexual rules I give you if you choose this. You are not allowed to put any of my characters in an obvious sex position even if their “ parts ” aren’t showing. A sexual theme is allowed with a SELECT few, but NO sex. This goes for nonsexual/romantic themes as well.

5. Blood and nudity is permitted with all characters. Though some are bashful. No gore (meaning no guts/entrails/brains… all that ickiness).

6. I do not require a background or any coloring. I do not require an overly complex drawing. I just want a finished drawing. No sketches. Bare minimum I will accept will be lineart. I will not be judging based on how much time goes into your work, only by how effective it is. Sometimes simplicity can go a long way…

7. Anthro form is allowed with all animal alternative forms I give you. But if my or your character is originally an equine, you cannot make him/her an equine anthro. Likewise you can’t make an equine anthro a normal equine.

8. If your character or my character already has alternative forms you cannot pick that form to draw. If you characters has the ability to transform into any form… like one of mine… pick a form you have not drawn him/her in.

9. You can enter in either category (digital/traditional) or both... four entries max.

This is a link to a handful of my more favorite characters, but there are many more. I will give you their name, original form, brief description, basic personality, alternative forms you can select to draw them in, potential symbolism, brownie points (what I suggest but do not require), and if a romantic theme is allowed. They are broken out into 2 book series (these are unpublished/unwritten works). I have other book series as well, but these are the two most well established ones, and I didn’t want to drown you in characters. The link below the series will guide you to a more descriptive journal about them as well as any links to artwork I have already done for them. It may also reveal more characters which you can pick.

You can also peruse my gallery and pick a character that way if you wish. I’ll send you all the info I can. Some of them are under worked… which may allow for more freedom on your part. If you want an under worked character, let me know.

When you select a character you must note me and I will give you more information if I feel you need it. I will place your avatar with that character, but that does not mean no one else can pick him/her. I would just like other people to know so hopefully there will be a good spread.

You cannot ask me too many questions, but you sure as hell can try!

It can be overwhelming to read all the stuff in the linked journal (I’m trying to give a good spread of forms, symbolism, and themes) so if you want me to pick a character based on specifics you give me, that’s alright.

Ohhh... wow. It took me a minute for this to sink in. So what you're saying is, draw a pic of one of your chars and one of my chars interacting somehow, each in a different form from their usual. (Just to be clear)

I'll have to ponder this. One of my characters is a shapeshifter, so I feel like I'd be cheating if I used her

... but yes. I like this idea very much indeed... I knew you would come up with something interesting

I read over your characters there and I was really drawn to Ranu (no pun intended

), partially because I have been dying to do something red! But I have to admit I'm a bit intimidated by his avian alternative forms. Are those the only possible choices? I suppose if I work with ref I could do it... I'm just asking out of curiosity.

You got it exactly right!

Let think about him a little and see if I can pull any other forms that would be good for him. Flight and physical power are important to him... but he is a spectacular ground warrior as well... I'll get back to you!

I have a shapeshifter too (Star) buuuuut you can draw your shapeshifter in a form you haven't drawn him/her in before. That could work. I'd like people to use this contest too possibly test their limits, but there is a good enough spread of creatures (I think) to allow for comfortable pieces.

and if we chose someone like Ranu, who doesnt normally transform into a horse, could we make him one?

or do we have to only transform him into the things he can be?

It's all good! Yes they HAVE to be in another form. My "Alternative Forms:" are my suggested forms for my characters that you can draw for this contest.

You cannot draw your character or my character in their present form. Like you could NOT draw Sakata as a horse. You must draw them as a different creature and the choice of creature should be based on their personality.

For example: Ranu is a dragon... and that is it. He has a very cutting, strong personality. Highly territorial. Very loyal. Great Warrior. I think based on his personality good alternative creatures would be an eagle or a gryphon. You can draw him as either, pick a different character, or beg me to think of another form for him.

If your character has the ability to transform (one of mine can, Star) then choose a form you have not already drawn... or a form they cannot change into.
